While I Was Away: Hotel Brummell, Palo Cortao & Garage Blume

Ever since I moved here in '14, Barcelona has been booming! So many cool new cafés, restaurants, bars, hotels, and in some cases, all four options in the one space, such as is the case with Hotel Brummell, a small 20 room boutique hotel in the Poble Sec barrio, which opened its doors in '15.

Hotel Brummell is firstly a hotel but it also has a restaurant, bar, shop and yoga studio attached to it. For their restaurant, Brummell Kitchen, they collaborated with the deliciously Southern Spanish restaurant Palo Cortao down the road (a favorite amongst my friends). I have yet to have dinner at the Kitchen but the weekend brunch there is worth the treck up to the top of Poble Sec. As to the yoga studio, The Garage Blume, it is an old garage converted into a yoga studio with a side door that leads you into Brummell's courtyard. You're probably thinking garage, yoga space, huh? But it is a beautifully tranquil space, I assure you! It's too far from home for me to join in their weekly classes but on the weekends, they have workshops which are much more accessible plus you get to pop over to Brummell Kitchen for brunch or a drink afterwards - my kinda yoga!

In terms of design, Brummell is, as described on their website, "an urban oasis created by friends." They have managed, along with the help of architect Inma Rábano and Blankslate, to totally transform this 1870s building - they call the design "Tropical Modernism", as inspired by Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa. My favorite space is their courtyard, which even on sweltering Summer days or eves, when the city is buzzing with tourists, manages to stay cool and peaceful. My photos don't do the space justice, so check-out Brummell's Instagram feed to get a better feel of the space.
